There are four pass levels at university.

The top award is a first class.

Then Upper Second - 2:1

Then Lower Second - 2:2

Then Third

Actually, Ethel seems to have forgotten a level. 'First', '2:1', '2:2', and 'Third' are all classes of Honours degrees. If the recipient chooses to do so, they're entitled to write BA(Hons) after their name, rather than just BA. (Obviously, the same thing applies to BSc, BEd and other bachelors' degrees).

However, someone who fails to achieve a 'Third', doesn't automatically fail. There's a further category, which is simply a 'Pass' degree. (The recipient can't add the 'Hons' bit after their degree).

In terms of answering your question about how good a 2:2 is, it's 'about average'.

Students who wish to go on to study for a Master's degree are usually required to hold a 'good honours' degree (which normally means a First or a 2:1), so a 2:2 means 'fairly good but not quite good enough to stay on a university'.

Even a 3rd class or Pass degree is not be sniffed at. It still requires study and effort.

..and some people with thirds go on to do very well in life -like Carol Vorderman and David Dimbleby.
