I am an honest hardworking person, (I have just finished raising my family), and have lots of drive and ambition. But a) I have not worked for an employer for the last 20yrs, b) I have no paper qualifications and c) I don't drive.

What sort of job can I apply for? I'm in the process of applying for volunteering work but is that my only option? Are there any apprenticeship type schemes for people over 36 because that is what I would dearly love to do?

Many thanks for any ideas.

Have you narrowed down your thoughts to any particular area of employment? You're young enough to do virtually anything you want. Voluntary work in a particular field would greatly assist you in getting a job in that field. How about doing a qualification at nightschool to boost your knowledge, and to show to an employer that you're willing and able to learn/train. Apply for a few jobs to hone your interview skills. Don't sell yourself short - think of all the skills you've become an expert at over the last 20 years! From personal experience I've always found it is easier to find work if you're already in work, so if you get a job that isn't exactly what you want, at least you're gaining skills & experience in a work place, and you have something else to add to your CV.
Good luck.
have ya thought of doing an access class.it 1yr and equal to a'level it aimed at the older person and very interesting.it made up of different subjects.it can be done in most local colleges, most of the students would be in same situation as you are.good luck.i happen to know they want train drivers from women up to 50yrs.

Thanks guys. I really did not want to study but if that is what I have to do. Thing is down my way there is only access into humanities or health and social studies. I'm not interested in either. If there were distance learning access courses I'd be quite happy. Thanks anyway. Do you know if you'll recieve on the job training if you want to become a train driver - it sounds interesting. Won't you need to know how to drive at least a car first?
During WW1 most pilots landed their planes
then had to walk home, because they neither
owned, nor could drive, a car.

Train drivers obviously get on-the -job training.
There is no other way to learn the practicalities
of the job.
