A person holding political office is not an �employee� in EC law terms because he does not satisfy the criterion set out in ECJ case-law of providing a service of economic value under another�s direction: (C-66/85 Lawrie-Blum [1986] ECR 2121).
Neither can such a person properly be described as being self-employed, particularly given the absence of a service of economic value: (C-55/94 Gebhard [1995] ECR I-4165).
