I am a security guard for a well known hardware store.Recently i observed a male on cctv eat sweets in store without payment (theft by consumption). The suspect then approched the helpdesk where this individual handed over a c.v.After the suspect had left,i looked at his c.v and destroyed the c.v as i was protecting the company from a potenial dishonest member of staff.Later that day i was investigated for intent to destroy company property.I was suspended for 72 hours on full pay.Does this c.v belong to the company or the individual at this point??

it was the companies property - it can be treated like mail would be, though obviously it has been hand delivered in this case.
You had no right to destroy the CV, what you should really have done is spoken to the personnel manager and told them what you had seen, then they could have made a decision as to whether they would interview the person.
Since when did a hardware store sell sweets?

I agree with everyone else on here, and can't understand how you got a job as a security guard when you should've been aware of these situations. You made a decision about someone and took it upon yourself to act, whereas you're answerable to the manager of the store, because the CV was not for your eyes. Having seen what you did, you should've had a word with your superiors, and left it up to them to ascertain the gravity of the incident and make decisions.

I could come on and ask if ,The chocolate covered nuts taste as nice as the jelly spanners.

But lets not go there.

What you have done may well result in you receiving the P45 award in this case.
The only Tool anyone responding here can see is yourself.

Sorry but can i ask if the well known department store employs you ???.
Or is the Guard job an agency thing .
I hope its agency as your next job may be looking after a Bucket of sand and a pallet load of cement.

We still need folk to look after our building sites.

At least you will still have a job.

Sorry but just looked at your posted info date.
I think we would like to know the outcone of the 72Hrs.

I so hope it is in your favour but hope the person who Gave in his CV never finds out about what you did.

There maybe trouble ahead in your life if he is.

He is in a position to bust you and not you doing the same to him.
From the Guard/CCTV perspective.

You really should have reported the situation to the Manager.

Feedback on the outcome.
Sorry , but you sound like a jobsworth who only does part of your job, yes you like to watch but the second part should have been aprehension, you want to take more care in future and do the job correctly, for the record I must also be guilty of theft by consumption on a regular basis , i always try a grape before i buy them from Tesco's (holding wrists out for handcuffs) ...good job they don't have security on and are a bit more lenient ......
