im thinking of resigning from my job as a telecoms engineer to start something new - any1 got any suggestions of jobs with a difference - i.e - i saw an advertisment for workers in the antarctic in a paper the other day - im thinking of the type of work thats a bit out of the ordinary ? doesnt have to be in telecoms and i would consider voluntary work ?

Please don't leave your job , unless you are very wealthy , in the present job climate. Use your spare time to research the opportunities there are , including the Antartic, get yourself fixed up first and then resign. It is always better to find a job whilst you are in employment than it is when you are out of work,

Sorry this has not answered your question, but alas I don't know of any really unusual jobs.
