Covering letter/Introduction letter

Hi there I wonder if anyone can help. My niece has just left school and is going to college after the summer. Other than a placement through school and babysitting she has not actual work experience. Of course I am biased but she is a lovely girl with a nice manner and willing to learn. She is looking for summer work which would hopefully lead to part time work throughout college time so we have put together a CV and she would like to hand this in to local shops/businesses. Could anyone advise what we should put on a covering letter? many thanks

If I were you I would encourage her to visit Shops/Businesses in Person rather than send letters out in the hope of a reply. With the amount of Job requests landing on Desks on a daily basis, hers may well end up in the Bin along with the rest. Jobs Advertised in Job Centres may well have been filled by the time your Niece gets round to applying for them so get her to visit Establishments in Person and she will hopefully get lucky. Being in the right place at the right time is the most important thing. Good luck !

yes thanks - this is her intention to actually hand them in to places. We would put the CV in envelope but just looking for what she is best to write on the covering letter. Obviously she may not to get to see the person dealing with the actual hiring so just wanted a nice introduction although she has sort of done this on CV.

If possible she should try to find out the name of the person who she is writing to.

I like many other young people going onto further full time education in the autumn am looking for seasonal work in my home/new collage area.

Other than my school work placement and babysitting duties, which I have gone into more detail on my accompanying CV, I have no direct experience of working within/in the xxxsockxxx trade. However from my CV you will see that I am able to learn new duties quickly and am capable of working both within a team and on my own initiative. BIG YOURSELF UP A BIT BUT DON'T GO OVER THE TOP. Punctual, customer service etc.

If you are looking to place seasonal workers with possibly a view to working on a weekend or casual basis after this I would be grateful if you would consider my application favourably.

Forgot to add you could also put in a self address stamped envolope. You might think it isn't appropriate but you won't get a reply otherwise.

At least this way they think about you more than they otherwise would and will remember you when they do need someone.

If I'd wanted a critique of my spelling I would have asked for it.

As the posters niece is going on to further education I would have thought they wouldn't copy and past but use it as an example.

I have decided to let anyone who think they should be the arbitor or my spelling ability what to do, so well done pink-kittens you are the first. Most definitely not the last of course.

lol that's you telt pink-kittens, actually that is a very good letter cassa content wise but maybe a bit wordy, i have had to read CVs loads and the covering letter would notmally get a cursory glance and a hand written one is always interesting, rather than typed, but even typed ones can show up a lack of general competence
