Will and proof of ownership of property

My mum wants to remake her will and would rather not go to a solicitor, although I think it would probably be better if she did. She wants her house to be sold and the proceeds split between the 4 grandchildren. Seeing as I will probably be the one who has to sort it all out I asked her where the deeds were, but she has no idea. She got divorced around 20 years ago and her husband paid off the house and gave it to her but she says she has never seen anything official to prove this. She did ask him about the deeds many years ago but he claims not to have them or know where they are. Obviously she can't leave her house to anyone if it turns out not to be hers at all. How should we go about sorting this out. Contacting her husband again isn't much of an option as even if I knew where he was he's not likely to be very helpful.

The Land Registry will have a record of who owns the property.

Deeds are unnecessary and mean very little these days

The desire to rewrite her will is a different issue. If her affairs are simple she may be able to use the Which? Wills online service here at a cost of £89.
