Can I be forced to return to work

i was recently told i was bing made redundant, my firm offered me another job which i accepted in writing. How ever i have been off sick for 4 weeks and the gp has asked that i refrain from work a further 2 weeks. my employers head of personnel has demanded i return to work within a week or they will give the job to someone else. Can they do this?
