how long can money sit in a bank account waiting for probate to be started. is there a time limit on starting the paper work or can the money be left in the bank for years.

There isn't really a time limit - as long as it takes is the answer. But if someone is stalling you can prod them.

There IS a time limit for paying IHT, if due. 6 Months I think without looking it up.

There's traditionally an 'executor's year' but I'm not sure of it's legal basis.
