I bought a used car from a car showroom on the 28th of june 2009 with a 12 month MOT . Today the car broke down exactly 29 days afte purchasing it . The AA cannot find anything wrong with the engine, and have checked everything, but it will not start. They have deduced that it could be the catalyst that as collaped inside the casing and casing a blockage in the exhast and not allowing any fumes to escape thus stoping the car from firing. If this is found to be the reason and i have to have a new exhaust system, have I any rights after 29 days to ask the garage i purchased it from to pay any bills. The catalyst was passed by them in a MOT test if it went wrong after 29 days have i any rights to ask them to pay 4 any new parts fitted ? On the invoice it do's NOT say sold as seen. Please advice to what i can do .. Thanks

Hi dl56uk
Have you spoken to the garage about this? If so what did they say?
The law states that purchases must be 'fit for purpose' - so if they knowingly sold you a duff car they are in the wrong. It could be that it was just bad timing, the fault was there but they didn't lnow about it and if you approach them in a friendly way they may offer to repair or replace as a gesture of good will.
An MOT cert only verifies that the car is in a roadworthy condition, it does not guarantee that it is not liable to break down etc.
Samuel is spot on but i would add that in my experience i wouldn't take what the aa say as gospel.
Before worrying about what is or isn't covered, take it back to the garage and try to resist the temptation to vent your frustration too on them, this won't help. Give them the opportunity to be helpful - I would expect any decent garage to sort the entire problem out FOC as it is only a very short time since you bought it.
