Can you have a combined tv/dvd player without having to pay a tv licence if all you are doing is watching dvds on the tv only? Do the scanners pick up tvs or just tv use?

It's not just scanners - when you buy a tv they take your name and address and cross reference.
if your device is CAPABLE of picking up TV as it happens, then yes you do have to have a license even if you never turn it on

Actually, bednobs, that is incorrect.

If you use a device capable of receiving broadcast TV but do not watch or record television programmes at the same time as they're broadcast, you don't need a TV Licence.

If you neither watch, nor record, programmes, then you are never going to see them.

... in which case, take down your TV aerial ... then you definitely won't need a licence.

if the tv licence people (cream sponges ) had scanners that worked why would they want to come and search your property every 5 weeks (approx) for the first 6 months that you do not have a licence. then approx every 6 months for a year or so after that.

1, joe public who pays for a licence
2, fred bloggs who is a tv licence evader

1 month later another tv licence scum came and wanted to search again. they have caught him at the property 6 times i the last 4 years.

you do need a tv licence for having any kind of tv receiver,, the reason being proove you havn't been using it, or proove you can't recieve a tv reception for whatever reason

i suppose, i guess it's then about how guilty you appear to be, if your tv can recieve tv, you have the aerials up and all, but the only thing that you didn't do is turn on the tv thats is harder to proove, thats pretty much what i'm getting at, but other than that i take your word for it, i doubt they would be like that over here in ireland, they would as good as make you have a tv licence for having a picture of a tv

thing is i have not had a tv plugged in for a year , had plenty of letters off them and had them keeping their finger on my doorbell till i answered the door.
