All they're asking is for their copywright to be protected. Why should AI developers profit off the backs of musicians and other artists.
Myfanwy; Not all popstars are multi-millionaires and i dare say that many who are, probably vote Conservative. Isn't that what people with money do?
Copyright is preferential treatment. You don't get plumbers and bricklayers saying that because you are still enjoying the work they did years ago they need a further payment. I appreciate that creative work may not be valued for ages, but the way it works now one can milk old work all one's life having done nothing more to warrant further reward; I've even heard it be claimed that it is "their pension" when, no, a pension is taken from present one's earnings and needs investing, it ain't a free payment. The present system is skewed in their favour, and other workers don't get offered that.
Now I appreciate I've not looked into this latest moan in depth, but it seems to me if a creator is happy for human beings to experience their work and decide to have a bash themselves, then that is no different to a piece of hardware and coding doing the same. The cat is out of the bag, the genie can't be put back into the bottle. The future is what it is and even King Canute could not halt the tide.
Human creators will continue to create for the sheer joy of creation, as all enthusiasts do. But maybe the use of it as a way to continually attract unjustified wealth has come to an end, and the public will be able to enjoy such art at a commodity level price.
OG; Rich people can invest and make good money without doing any work for it other than that they gambled a bit of dosh. An artist can work hard in a garret and earn f-all, unless they are lucky and it catches on. They do it for love, but they also would like to earn a bob or two, so that they don't starve. tik-tokers and influencers and investors expect a return, so why not artists?
Tik-tokers and influencers are also parasites. Investers at least fund something (hopefully) useful. That is at least a decent function and loans ought not be free.
Of course Percy Shaw should have made something appropriate to the initial idea at the time. Not as much as those having to manufacture them of course. But he ought not be able to milk it forever. I refer you to the plumber/builder example. Are they not entitled to a payment ? Or are we happy they receive an annual payment forevermore because they were clever enough to do something at the time ?
