How long will my brother get for gbh ?

my little bro has been charged with gbh.. he had a stanly knife in his hand intimidatin his gf with it and accidently then cut her face she needed it glued..
b4 this he strangled her and was slso intimidating her with a hammer and screwdriver. he has had previous he done 3weeks in prison for abh on his previous gf, as he broke her nose. He obviously needs help. My family and I are goin out our minds not knowing whats happening. Could anyone tell us how long he is looking at.
I understand a max ov 5yrs on section 20 and cud do a life sentance on section18... jsut dont know wot to expect coz he has had previous.

i am not 100% sure wot section he has been charged under as anuva family member went to the hearin in the magistrates. I know it is very serious and i hope he does go down for a long time as he clearly needs help.
Only thing that we are worried about is he is sayin that he was tryin to cut himself and she tried to stop him and he cut her... she doesnt think she in strong enough to go to court etc..will she have to give evidence ? even by vidoe link she doesnt think she could emotionally go thru it agen.
I hate to say it as he is my little brother but he is a monster! alot more has happened over the last 6yrs but neva got anywhere coz ov lack ov evidence or my mum droppin charges etc...will all this be in his file tho ? even tho they dropped the charges?
sprri to rabbit on i am just so un-sure and want the best for his gf as they have a baby together and he does need help

he is currently held on remand until his court date in 6weeks at crown court

even though my sister in law has told them that she knows he dint mean to do it as he thought the blade away... (i know this doesnt justify anything at all) will it still be a heavy sentance? I would like to go to court when it is at crown but obviously i dont know how to go about goin, or if i can just turn up

yes im sure his 'battered & cut' girlfriend would..as his sister i would as well, i dont condone wot he dun to her or even his ex gf...now im not usin excuses..this has been goin on for 6yrs and he is only 22!!! Everytime he did something to his ex gf or to my mum, it was classed as "domestic" and everytime it went to court the judge threw it out...he put my mother in hospital bcoz he battered her, the judge sed 'this is the lowest form of domestic violence' therefor he got put on tag for 2weeks with a curfew of 5am-9pm?? the justice system has failed him and also our family. It got the point where there was no point in even callin the police bcoz it wouldnt go anywhere. this is why we are all so confused as to why now, and also we dont believe he will do anytime! we have no faith in the courts at all.

micmac i did not remove ur comment? i understand totally what u are all sayin and i am not takin such affence to it...he is scum i know this and i am on here to get advice not people tellin me what i already know..
i am not sure if he has put his plea in yet... i do hope he pleads guilty as it would just show how low he would go by pleadin not guilty :(
regardin the blade, it was a stanly knife and he was threatening her with it but the blade was not out :s it was in inside but as he grabbed it off the side the blade came out and it cut her (believe me i know this sounds all funny)
