Is there a legal limit on what a shop can charge for postal stamps? I have just been charged 44p for a second class stamp.

Was it for the normal sized letter stamp or a large letter 2nd class stamp?
Factor is right; it could be for a large letter. Is this the case then? I thought it was against the law to overcharge for stamps too.

We shall have to stamp out this crime.

this is the address to write to if your charged more than the face value
If it was a Large Letter the stamp was UNDERpriced by 14p.

Royal Mail approved retailers buy their stamps direct from RM at a discount (3% 1st Class, 7% 2nd Class) and must adhere to the RM T&Cs by selling the stamps at, or below, face value.

All other retailers who purchase their stamps 'unoficially' (i.e. over the counter from perhaps an approved retailer) have no constraints on the price they may charge. Royal Mail cannot punish these retailers in any way. You are not forced to pay the higher price - go elsewhere.

I was charged 44p for a standard 2nd class stamp which at the Post Office is 36p
Despite what others have said I think a shop can sell them at any price if they have bought them over the counter themselves
So we're talking about what, 8 pence here?
