a work colleague went to Texas in january after meeting a bloke online and she's married him, not sorted her legal status out immigration wise and now he's cheated on her and she's stuck out there and trying to get home but scared she'll be collared at the airport for visa violations. she's been there 8 months, married him and has nothing now, yes she's a eejit and i told he that in january, but hey, her life, but now what can she do to get home?
the usa authorities will be more concerned with getting her out of the country - if they do kick up a fuss, they'll deport her and she just wont be allowed back in agaain. Not a problem if all she wants is to come home
Regardless of the 'cheating' is she legally married to a US citizen ? Is he supporting her finacially ?
What ever, she needs to get hold of the nearest British Embassy and ask for help.
She won't get collared at the airport for visa violations - US immigration do not routinely check the passports of departing passengers - they leave that to the airlines who will only be concerned as to whether her passport allows her admission to the UK and that her ticket matches the name in the passport.
Future visits to the US will be off the menu though.
she'd met him via the internet, struck up a relationship with him and used video links to chat to him and his family, she was warned about going over for a visit, but it just ell on deaf ears, it's such a cliche really, doomed from the start. I even gave her a 'key word' to use if ever she needed help or was in trouble, told her to use 'Garth Brooks' in a message and I would know she was in trouble. She messaged me early July and in quite a long message just happened to say she hadn't heard any Garth Brooks. I started to panic then and didn't know what to do! Must remember to always have a plan in place if anything like this happens to a friend again!
