...have they been sentenced to two years and must serve 12 months in prison? Or will they be out in 6 months?

Out in 6 months, then on 'normal' licence for 6 months, followed by the 'extended' licence period of an additional 12 months.

If sentenced only to a year, why would there be an additional 12 months' licence at the end of it? Is it not more likely to have been a two-year sentence, released after the usual 50% has been spent in gaol and the balance on licence? That would mean twelve months in gaol and
twelve months on licence.
Why cannot sentencing be straightforward? I year should mean 1 year.

The prospect of time off for good behaviour means cons will behave themselves. If a year meant a year they'd be wrecking the place
