Illegal Or Unlawful

what's the difference between illegal and unlawful?
Was talking to a friend about tv license's and he said that not having one was unlawful but not illegal.
What's the difference?

Yes it certainly has got away from the original point...as I have said,everyone has their own choice and I for one do not care if one opts out from paying their licence.

Not paying a TV license is ..NOT... illegal (unlawful yes, illegal, no).
Hence the original question about the difference between the two...and there is a diference.
If you want to continue paying a tax that you dont have to pay then continue paying it but dont berate me for NOT paying it.

FWIW your friend was wrong. It is neither illegal nor unlawful not to have a TV licence; it is illegal to receive TV programmes at a property that is not covered by a TV licence.

It is less stressful to pay than to tolerate the persecution of the licencing authority for having the audacity to own a property without a TV.

For the record I reiterate my belief that the license system is an appalling tax and the BBC should be funded from general taxation which is not so easy to avoid and does away with the additional expense of a separate collection and monitoring/persecution.

no its not...its unlawful, not illegal. If its illegal the police would have been around to arrest me, they havnt even though ive invited them to return with the police

OG, I dont find anything stressfull about the licensing authority, just shut the door on them and tell them to get a warrent. They never do of course because I havnt actually done anything ILLEGAL.

My works has an unlicensed tv coz we only play demonstration vids. 3 caravans on my property (occasional occupation) are all covered by my home license. Nailits excuses make perfect sense; it takes a criminal to show how to challenge the law ;)

CORBYLOON, show me a link that says that the bbc have a right to enter your home. You cant. You can in fact write to them and withdraw your 'implied right of access' which means you can in fact make it a crime for them to even walk up your footpath.
Having a tv reception. without a license, IS NOT ILLEGAL. If you choose to pay for a license then thats your choice, If you go to court for not having a license then is also your own doing, If you get miffed at people like myself not having a license then that is also YOUR choice. Jealousy will get you nowhere, having some balls and telling tv licensing to do one will.
