In 2002 I had a charge placed on my house by a credit agency.

I have recently read the charge lasts 12 years. Is this correct?

don't think so - that charge lasts until the debt it satisfied or the charge is removed.
you are possibly thinking of a ststue of limitations which is 12 years for an unclaimed mortgage debt. However, if they already have a chrge, this is not unclaimed
