How Long Are You Required To Keep Goods.

If you have had sa lodger, and they leave after a number of years, but leave several boxes of 'stuff' on your premises, how long are you obliged to keep this for them please.
My friend has had this stuff 3 years now, and would like to dispose of it. The girl rang and asked for it back a few days ago, so it was brought downstairs and placed by the front door ready for pickup.
So far no one has been for it.
I had it at the back of my mind there was a legal obligation for it to be kept just for a few weeks/months.

No expert but I would have thought you could contact them and set a date after which you intended to dispose of the goods. Then they'd have to collect or accept they were slung.
