I currently have a gym membership with Nuffield Health.

Three months ago and still within the fixed term of my membership my monthly fee was put up by a few pounds. When I asked why this was, I was told it was due to the rise in energy costs. I didn't accept this but I have been charged the extra fee in the months since.

Yesterday, I received an email saying that company wide they are going to be turning off the spa pools ie hydropools for six months and turning down the the heat in the pools due to conserving electricity and gas, the very thing they put my membership fee for no less than three months ago.

Essentially my question is are they allowed to do this?

I expect you'll find they're allowed to do what they like (subject possibly to advance warning rules) and if you don't like it you "vote with your feet".
The fuel prices have increased again to-day and it sounds like they have decided to maintain the fees at the current rates so need to find other ways to save money.

You should ask them to quote the relevant section in the Terms and Conditions for your specific type of membership to support their right to increase the fees.

three days notice were that they are going to be turning off items within their centres.
You can't complain about the increase in fees now as by paying the new fee for three months you are deemed to have accepted it.
You can complain about the reduction in amenities, though.
Before you contact them check your terms and conditions. I looked online and it states that facilities may be withdrawn when necessary for maintenance but yours might be different.

Then you need to be sure you know what you want before you contact them. It would be reasonable for you to cancel the contract without penalty due to these changes.
You might prefer them to reduce the fees for six months.
Know what you want, be firm but polite and deal with it as soon as possible.
