Found purse - what happens to the money if unclaimed?

My girlfriend recently lost her purse and was very surprised (and pleased) when we got a letter from the police saying that it had been found and could be come and collect it within 28 days or else it would be disposed of.

My question is - there was quite a lot of money still in the purse. Do the police have to destroy the money as well, or is there a protocol or charity to which the money goes to?

This is in the UK btw.

Thanks!

I handed a mobile phone into the police station a couple of months ago. I had to take back the form they gave me after six weeks to see if had been collected, but before eight weeks were up, when they would dispose of it. I remember something on the back about six months for legal ownership! Chucked form away tho' as it was claimed.
I found a purse that had 30 in it and some credit cards, I handed it in to the police but I still got into a lot of trouble!

A few days later which was very close to my wife's birthday I came home from work and My wife shouted at me " Who the hell is Shiela, what have you been doing"

She then showed me a big bunch of flowers which she thought were for her which had a card saying "thank you very much for being so kind to me, Shiela"

She was of course the purses owner.

I found 300 in an unidentifiable wallet when I was 15, handed it in to the police and got it back later as it hadn't been claimed. Can't remember how long I had to wait though.
The loser has four weeks to claim the propery, if not claimed then the finder has four weeks to claim it. After that it goes to auction for charity. Exceptions are weapons, drugs and credit cards, and also mobiles. Reason for that is they have personal information stored in them
if the police can identify the lost purse they have to contact you and give you a time period to collect .the problem ; if it had money in it the police will return all its contents incuding purse however in our world today unfortunetly the person that foud it may have removed the money ,or it was found the money taken, then disgarded and found again wthout the contents . further more even the policeman that delt with it may not be as honest as he should . the police have to hold on to any lost property including money for 6 months unless they can identify its owner only if they cant and after the 6 month the finder gets all
