how old can a child be, to be left home alone

does anybody know how old a child can be when left home alone? My 2 boys (11 and 8) often beg me to leave them at home when i pop out to asda etc.Although i do trust them im sure there is no doubt rules and regulations regarding this!

As you can see, there is no law about this. If your boys are sensible then I see no harm in leaving them alone for half an hour or so in the daytime. I'm sure you have a mobile phone which they can call you on if needs be.

But I suggest that you tell the boys what time you will be back, and always make sure you are back before then. If you know you are going to be half an hour, tell them you be 45 minutes. This gives you a little time in case of hold ups.

Technically the law states that under 13s aren't to be left alone.

As the first person stated, there is not law for this...However, depending on the circumstances, if the police were concerned about a child being "Home Alone" they could take the child to a place of safety under a Police Protection Order. Social Services get involved and it all becomes a sticky mess.

Best thing is to use common sense when deciding what to do.
