My mam (who used to be married to a farmer) has a pellet gun still from the farm, she is unsure what to do with it and if it is legal for her to have it? please advise,

There are hundreds of little laws concernong when and where and indeed who can use it. If she doesn't want it then she can always hand it to the local bobby or at a police station. Selling it is a dodgy thing.
If she is really worried, then before handing it in a little phone call won't go a miss incase she is stopped en route.

if it is an 'air gun' and i guess it is, then it is perfectly legal for her to have it on the property.
She can even use it within the boundaries of the property as long as she is more than (I believe) 30ft from the centre of any public right of way.
Or, if she wants rid of it, put it in the locked boot of the car and take it to the police station for destruction.
