changing name of a child

A couple I know are separated but have a child. The child was named by them and the father is named on the birth certificate.
The mother has now told the father that she has changed the childs middle name. Can she do this without consent from the father?

This is only allowed if the parents are not married.
I would double check but unless you are married there are no rights.
