Criminal, usually.
Theft is firstly a Criminal offence, however, if one is found guilty of a theft and the object in question is irretreivable, the Civil court may decide to compensate the owner for the value of their loss. The Civil courts generally involve 'putting people back to their original position' before the loss/injury occured. Called punitive damages - money!
Criminal conviction. However now days shops have a scheme called civil recovery which then can take the matter to a civil court to get some money back for the cost of security staff and systems along with other security devices.
