Tips

My daughter is doing work experience in a hairdresser. She is not getting paid for the 2 weeks she is there but is washing loads of peoples hair. She has recently found out that people have been leaving her tips - one person left her 5 - but she has not received anything unless the customer gives the tip to her direct ( In 7 days she has been given 4 in tips) The lady who took the 5 tip said she put it down and it has "gone". My daughter complained to the manager who said "What do you want me to do about it". Is this an example off work experience?

i am suprised that in the first two weeks of being with her placement provider she feels she can compain about matters.
i understand why she is agrieved but this will get her no where. ihave never known children to get paid for their work experience placements
turn it around and think how lucky she is to have gotten a two week placement. reward is not all about cash, but i can see that it is frustratin gfor her

If the boss of the salon was half decent she would have given your daughter the tips as she is the one who earned them.Unfortunately some employers look on the work experience kids as unpaid skivvies and they treat them very badly. They don't have to give her the tips though.Tell your daughter to complain to the school and maybe they won't use that salon to send the kids to again.
daffy!!!!!!
I would not sugest her to complain to the school. The schools work long and hard to gain placements for students and it is very good of the businesses to offer to take these girls and boys, and it is often a big interruption to a small business, what with kids public liability insurance.
The school then visit the employer and a list of what she can and cannot expect is clearly set out.I doubt very much that Payment was mentioned. The hairdressing places and more desirable placements can be filled 10 times over by hopeful students so this lass is extremely lucky to have such a good placement.
I suspect if the lass complains to school it will not be greeted kindly.
A thank you card to the employer at the end is what should be done. I have heard it all now.
I agree with velvet.

go bailey!! stupid, stuck up greedy little cow! its horendous having kids with u for two weeks, sooooo not good for business! and then they expect dosh!! the last lad who came to us was a sweetheart, and then wrote to us to say that he didnt realise how much fun a work place could be and that he`d learnt the art of banter and how much he had learnt from us!! said altough it wasnt his chosen profession, it helped him grow up and nurture his humour!! so tell that greedy daughter to sod off and quit if she doesnt kike it!! shame on her for expecting pay.
god i`m in a foul mood again. especially after that awful thread from ************* about that ill kid

As a customer if I left a tip for the girl who washed my hair I would class that as stealing if the receptionist pockets the money. If she was a waitress tips are left on the table for the person who served you - not the thief person at the till. Do you not understand what is being said the money is given to her as the hairwasher and this person is taking it along with her tips. If someone gave me money to give to you as you gave a good service would your opinion be "cor she's lucky to be able to give that service" the money is hers and should be given to her. Reward is not about cash - she does charity work every Friday evening for the last 2 years so she is not a money grabber. What makes the thief OK to take the money for the work my daughter has done?
tell her to quit and stop moaning!!! no-one will take a child seriously!!! shes got no proof and whats the pointin her staying if shes hacked off!!!! tell her shes had a cushy job and to be grateful that her mum is complaining too!!! theirs no point to this thread cos u r clearly not listening, shes work experience, shes 15 and no-one at the salon cares about her, which is sad, i know cos i`m sure shes a nice honest girl, but its a dog eat dog salon, at least she know not to be a hairdresser!
would she like two weeks with me? the only tips we get, is "wear a long sleeve top so the bites and the scars dont show" or "dont give them hot food or they will through it at u"
thats a tough job, care work, not just poncing around washing hair and expecting to keep the tips!!!!
bye

i tend to agree with what the others have written (although perhaps not in such strong terms) If i leave a tip at the hairdresser, i expect it to go to the person who cut my hair, not the extraneous people "washers, swweepr-uppers, tea makers) and unless someone gives the money directly to her, she shouldnt expect any of it. Out of curiosity, how did she find out that people were leaving tips just for her? did someone tell her?
Greedy you may feel she is being, but surely she shouldn't expect other people to take what was intended for her? Surely the tip giver meant for it to go direct to the girl herself?
I did work experience, many moons ago now, but was 'paid'. I got my bus fare back and a daily allowance for my lunch all paid too me on the Friday I finished. It came to quite a bit as well. I worked hard and showed a lot of enthusiasm for the job I was helping to do. I answered phone calls on the exchange speaking and dealing with members of the public, I did the mail - some of it important mail at that - plus a few other jobs including typing letters that would be sent out to customers and although I wasn't expecting to get paid, I did. Thinking about that now, why shouldn't work experience be at least costs reembursed?
The salon got 2 weeks for free hair washing and hair sweeping up - surely she deserved at least to receive the tips she was given and not have them, in effect, stolen from her? It didn't come directly from the salon's till did it? And going by my daughters experience of getting WE, it had nothing to do with the school, she had to find her own placement by calling round and going into places she thought my give her a week or 2 of experience. Then it was OK'd by the school.
Velvet-lady - are you not the one who started the 'Why are AB'ers so aggressive' thread? Please, before you start calling children names, look at your post here. It comes across as pretty aggressive too me. If it soooo horrendous having children working with you for 2 weeks, don't take them, simple - if it's your managers choice then you have to grin and bear it I'm afraid

It is a shame your daughter wasn't given the tips directly.
I know when I had students working for me they were always treated kindly and with respect for their work. Tips are a kindness to say thank you and should go to the person being thanked.
Unfortunately your daughter has had work experience in a bad place where b1tchy little going nowhere types obviously work. I don't understand the mentality of these people lol.
Is this what your daughter is studying for? hairdressing?
I do hope she finds a lovely employer for her next working outing. Somewhere ethical would be lovely. :) xxx

Firstly - Velvet lady you are quite an insensitive, short sighted, rude, opinionated, offensive, stupid person - this AB is full of similar people and quite frankly you're not welcome if all you can do is post offensive comments to a genuine question.
If money is given and intended for someone in particular (as in - the person who washed/dried your hair) and another takes that money it is pure and simple theft.
I'm sure the girl does not expect to be paid for her work experience but a lot of employers use and abuse them for their own means - not in the sense that they want to offer them actual work experience but in this profession and waitressing where tips are made regularly it's quite a unique situation how can you compare this work experience with a care home - I'd hate to be looked after someone like Velvet Lady if she has an attitude like that.
I'm sure if this girl took a tip left for another person, she'd be out on her ear. Yes she should bring the subject up with school as it's not exactly teaching decent values - if you condone the behaviour of taking something that isn't yours. The school should bring up the subject with the salon - and should agree that if anything is left as a tip for her it should be given to her. If they dont agree to this (after all who wouldn't if they were honest and decent - after all it's two weeks not 52 weeks !!) they should not use them and the hairdresser would not get slave labour for that period.
I'm sure she didnt go to the salon with the expectancy of being paid, tips or otherwise, but if people are leaving tips for her then she is rightfully entitled to them.

btw, shes a nice girl, all her clients adore her, its just she puts so much into her job, looking after people that she gets sick of moaners who really have no need to moan, ie people who are able bodied and can walk and talk! bless her little cotton socks

whenever we have had work experience we always have had a collection for them, and either given them the money or bought them somehting, after all as a few people have said they get all the rubbish jobs that no one else really wants to do but has to because they have to be done. its rotten that people have given tips and they have gone "missing" if it was the other way round and tips given to permanant empolyees and had gone missing something would be done. i hope this doesnt put her off what she really wants to do
Even if your daughter wasnt doing work experience, unless the tip is given directly to her how does she know its specifically for her?
If someone gives the tip to her directly then fair enough but it sounds from your post as if your daughter wants a cut out of any tip that was left?
It's only work experience at the end of the day, she'll be gone in two weeks. If she gets any money for it it's a bonus surely?
