if i have been signed off sick by a doctor but wish to return to work before certificate date can i legally do so

As far as i can remember, No, you cannot return to work before the end date of your'e certificate UNLESS your doctor tels you that you can. I think its all to do with your workplace insurance.
Your employer should not allow you to return to work if your Doctors note says you should be signed off. you need to be signed as clear to return to work by your Doctor. If you are feeling well return to your Doctor and ask for a note that clears you to work from an earlier date.
You need to go to the docs and get signed back as fit for work , My employer wanted this , mainly so they could say in the return to work interview , you are fit to resume your duties for which you are employed, so there is no excuses...lol, if you have been off for a long while you could always ask for a gradual return to work .
