ive had a smart car for about three years now and one of the perks is being able to park them sideways (ie so both back wheels touch the kerb). However i heard recently that parking like this is against the law. Does anyone know if this is true?

I can't think that it is against the law - there is no specific law against it, unless there is a sign at the parking bay giving specific instructions.

It could be illegal during the hours of darkness when all drivers are required to park nearside to kerb or have their lights on.

What happens if you are boxed in and can't open the door?

that has never happened to me, people seem to be sensible! if not i just get my flexible husband to get in then drive out and let me in
when you say nearside to the kerb what do you mean? In england, to me the nearside of a car is the passenger side - does that mean you cant park drivers side to the kerb?

Basically yes, bednobs. Apparently you aren't allowed to park on the other side of the road facing the wrong way..
