cctv
My friend believes she may have been viewed on cctv stealing from a shop, 2 months age. She was not apprehended by anyone on leaving the store She has had no contact from the police - not arrested, not invited for interview etc. Should she be worried? Can she be prosecuted on cctv evidence alone? No previous for this but conviction for false accounting.

In addition, the CCTV would have to record her picking the item up and keep her continuously in view to leaving the store for a conviction to be possible on CCTV alone. If she is out of sight of the CCTV for only seconds, that is enough for her to have replaced the item (unless of course it is a dirty great big thing and she is seen on CCTV leaving the store with it). Chances are the store security have viewed it though and will be aware of her description and undoubtedly have circulated it to other local shops so next time she is likely to be caught.
If she is that worried - why doesn't she do us all a favour and hand herself in? As we are constantly being told that 'scum' like your friend push the prices up for the rest of us. Had it been an honest mistake and sh'ed simply walked out without paying....then again she could have gone back and pointed out the her mistake. Again - nice 'friend'!
