How do I find out which solicitors give the free half an hour advice other than ringing them up and asking?

You could try a google search or look on local databases of solicitors to see if any of their adverts mention it.

Some may do a free initial consultation and some, more smaller high street ones, may do a legal surgery.

I'd tend to go for a legal surgery as it's more for unpaid advice as an initial appointment with a solicitor is more for a chat to see if there is something they can help with, discuss fees etc...

your local Citizens Advice Bureau will probably have a list of solicitors who offer an initial free interview.
