I know it is generally accepted that a householder is responsible for one side boundary or the other. Should their title deeds show which side and is there any law that says you must errect a fence, hedge or wall?

Your title deeds should indicate which walls you are responsible for - their should be T markings on the plan.

The top of the T goes along the boundary, and the tail of the T lies in the property responsible for it.

In general you are not obliged to erect a hedge, fence, wall or any other boundary if you don't want one.
Just one more point - the T indicates responsibility for maintenance - it does not indicate ownership.
