What annoys me is all the other countries in europe that seem to be able to watch the BBC without paying a penny!

What will happen with the old analogue TV signal?

There is a major debate over what should happen to the spectrum for analogue TV after switchover. If the Government auctions off use of the spectrum to private companies who would want it for uses such as mobile phone TV, it could obtain a substantial amount of money. In 2000 the Government raise £22bn with the auctioning of 3G mobile phone broadcast licences.

However, an alliance of public service broadcasters, consumer electronics manufacturers and retailers, HD for All, is lobbying for a third of the spectrum to be set aside for free-to-watch High Definition television. This would enable the BBC and current terrestrial broadcasters to air programmes in superior quality HD-TV. A decision has yet to be made. <<

I thought it was the ownership of the equipment that you paid the licence for not what you watch on it?

D97x7 you could own 100 or 1000 or more tv's you only need a licence to watch a live broadcast

Yes, but if the equipment is capable of receiving it you need a license irrespective of weather you watch it or not.

i understood if you had anything capable of receiving a tv signal in your house you had to have a licence.if not as an example i have a 47" tv which is internet connected ,what's to stop me just unplugging the aerial if i can see the tv coppers at my door how can they prove ive just been watching "live tv" as my apartment has a communal aerial built in it would be difficult for them to say "well you have a tv aerial for watching tv," i answer yes its built in, surely it cant be that easy .

the bbc will only give the figures that they want you to see

you will have a better chance of seeing the loch ness monster than a working tv detector van

They're very keen on the threatening letters though! A few years back I let my licence slip, for reasons I won't go into, all I kept getting was letters threatening the householder with court, I used to think how can you take me to court when you don'y know who I am.
Suppose it worked though as I purchessed one as soon as I was able.

Some do, as they think TVL have official powers. In fact they have no more power or rights than any other commission-driven salesman. Just ask them to leave.
