Just rented this dvd and couldn't understand what on earth was going on - can anyone give me a rough idea.  Kate Winslett kept changing her hair colour but appeared to be the same person - it's beyond me!!!

She was always the same person although i do remember that the movie skipped forward and back in time a bit.

i thought it was an excellent film though

As far as I remember it, the movie starts when they are meeting each other for the second time, and then it switch back and forth. I'll try to explain it, but I may just confuse you even more ;0)

  • You see their first relationship when Jim Carrey is in the "memory machine". Simply put they meet at a party, fall in love, she is wild - he's not, she's afraid of commitment, they break up, she get her memory modified because she's also afraid of the pain.
  • Jim (I can't remember their names) finds out about the memory modification and wan'ts one himself.
  • They meet again, finds out about the modifications and decides to try again
  • When Jim's modification is going on, you also follow the subordinate characters, this a linear storyline.

Thanx kaktus - now I understand a bit more.
not sure about becoming kids under the kitchen table...
I think that the turning into kids bit, was his subconcious trying to put his memories of her into a different place in his head so they wouldn't get removed and he would still remember her afterwards...?
Jenky - that's exactly what it was

Thanks, that makes it easier to understand. I felt it disturbed the flow of an otherwise perfect film. The house crashing and beach scenes...omg. I'm moved just thinking about that. I just lovve the ending. And the perfectly balanced subplots.

Some people compare it to 'being john malkovich'. what was that rubbish?

I haven't seen "Being John Malkovich", but I just checked IMDB,  they're both written by Charlie Kaufmanm that's probably why they're compared :0)
