last night.

As soon as he said it, I thought there's going to be lots of complaints but, you could see was joking and It was quite funny in a way.

Problem is, it wouldn't be nice to the people who have lost loved ones on the railway tracks.

em, oh isn't he just.
i reckon, him and wossy, where do they get them from
Bottom of a barrel comes to mind1
Must be a special place to learn how to be that kn****sh.
Pardon?
Ed Milliband has said JC should apologise, and that now Unison are involved, what a load of tosh.
He's a prize pr*** and it wasn't funny !
I reiterate my earlier response - it is unreasonable to ask someone not to be offended by something, simply because it does not offend you.

I could mount a defence for bear baiting - "It's only a dog having a bit of fun, and the bear isn't hurt ..." - but that's not a reasonable response is it?

An extreme example i know, but the argument stands. If viewers are offended, then that is their right, and dismissing them as humourless and Clarkson as humourous, and therefore immune from causing offence is to fail to see this issue from an adult perspective.
Totally blown out of all proportion! How many people were actually watching The One Show? It was a joke - for goodness sake (and completely taken out of context)! Have we totally lost our sense of humour in the UK? Shall we all just become dour and never have a laugh again? If so - either one of those lorries drivers kill me or let me jump on to the railway line at Reading - that would be convenient cos my daughter lives in Reading!!
And if you weren't watching The One Show - you won't understand my references!!
I've now had time to read all the comments and all I can say is for goodness sake - Andy - chill!! You are so uptight it must hurt?!?
Does this give us permission to shoot Jeremy in front of his family? Pleeeeease.
Maidup - did you see The One Show?
arieswoman, I am totally chilled thankyou. I think you are new on here - with experience, you will discover that I am not at all 'uptight', but I do believe my point is valid.

Just to clarify, I perfectly understand the humour and intent behind JC's comments, and I was not personally offended in the slightest by his observations.

My issue is this - if people are offended by something intended as ironic, it is wrong to accuse them of being humourless, or to excuse any observation by advising that anything offered as humour is devoid of any potential offence, and anyone who is offended has some sort of humour bypass.

I think the hoo-hah is utterly OTT given the obvious irony intended. but I have the luxery of not being thr object of the comments - this time - but again, you cannot simply shrug your shoulders dismissively and use humour as a get-out clause.

You can say "I was being humourous, I am sorry if you were offended ...", you cannot say "I was being humourous, and you are humourless for not understanding that, so that's your fault not mine ..."

Hope that explains my position more clearly.
Andy.....what about the people that didn't even watch it? It seems to be these people that are so offended.

Some people like to be offended and outraged.
A fair point ummmm, I have no time at all for bandwaggoners - they simply make an ill-judged incident, which has been dealt with and is best forgotten, into a massive harruphing fest - which the media love!
Jeremy Vine had some very upset people on his Radio 2 show today regarding JC's comments last night - one man was saying that having a joke regarding public sector workers being shot in front of their families was equivalent to sexism or racism!! Personally I enjoy watching JC and Top Gear, but I can see that it might have been better if he had not made that remark on the One Show, but I'm sorry that he apologised, but apparently the BBC apologised for it as well. They were probably anticipating the amount of complaints they had. Bet he won't be invited on many more early evening chat shows for a while!
obviously impossible to have your own opinion these days - if comment was heard in "the pub" no one would bother to comment - but it's easy to complain under the cover of anonymity.

Spineless, thats what us Brits are now
firstly excuse the absence of an ' in my last post; and in response to islasmum post maybe you should consider P.T Barnums well known quote - you can please some of the people....

Clarkson always was a "One-trick Pony" and not even original at that !
His act is just a "mash up" of Alan Whicker and Alan Partridge...and the
other night he looked like what he is now..old and "washed up"...while
trying desperately to appear "Morally outraged" in a mocking "Disgusted
of Tunbridge Wells" way,to play to a "Middle Britain" audience.
Anyone who says he didnt mean it,it was just a joke,is being a little naive imo.
Of course it was scripted..but he pushed it too far with his"Shoot them in front of their families" flourish at the end.
Nobody knew that was coming,That was just Clarkson.and his"Naughty Boy"
schtick.....It was all to help his video sales of course,a selfish motive..and I hope that he comes to rue that .He also helped his mate Cameron out,by
further vilifying the Public Sector workers on prime time TV...Meanwhile.he
will continue to "Swan around " the world in flash Sports Cars..and we TV
Licence payers will foot the bill...and he will continue to play the "Overgrown
Public Schoolboy" for a couple of million a year!...Count me out.by the way
