Have just watched a programme about a man who lives in Surrey who is a serious hoarder.I've never seen anything like it in my life.
The other people in the village didn't want to have anything to do with him but one man offered his help and eventually more people came forward to offer their help.
They manage to clear most of his garden but then had to tackle the house and then the programme ended! grrrrr.
Why don't people who make these programmes realise that most of us would liked to have seen the outcome?
Did anyone else on here watch it?

i agree nox, a few people in this were in a huff because they were enterring competitions for the gardens in the area and felt his ruined it...

none of their business what his garden looks like - if you dont like it, dont look... i dont believe people have any right to dictate what neighbours have on their land just because they dont like how it looks

that said, this guy was pretty down about it all and in the end was glad of the help... it had become an impossible mountain and with some help he began to see light

but it has to be in his own time, and his own decision.
I suspect our fellas house is probably a hazard as well Ummm, but I still can't help feeling it's his own business as long as HE'S happy and doesn't hurt anybody with it. I'm slightly too much the other way I like ridiculous amounts of space in my house ( my ex used to say it looked like the Bailifs had been in and taken all the furniture) but she's a messy collecting object as well;-)
I'd be complaining if my neighbours garden looked like that. You wouldn't know what was under that rubbish. My concern would be rats...
jno you are right when you say the problem is keeping stuff rather than acquiring it. It is a psychological disorder from which I suffer. I try not to bring extra things into my home as it is almost impossible to make decisions as to what to discard. Everything that comes in tends to stay in and only true rubbish (food packets and tea bags etc) is actually thrown away.
NOX, Is your dad willing to pay for thr clean up?
Nox's Dad?
My Dad's been dead nearly 40 years Dolt- but I wouldn't pay for a clean-up because I think it's an unnecessary intrusion on people's lives.

Stargazer, at least you can throw some rubbish out whereas this bloke seemed to keep everything.
Have you ever sought treatment or doesn't it bother you?
I think in the case of Mr Trebus the clean up was necessary because of vermin.
I will reply another day as I am just going to bed for now. Goodnight! x

You're right ummmm. Hope I haven't upset stargazer buying asking that personal question.
I saw that programme. I thought it was funny when the psychiatrist visited and said words to the effect of 'you're a nutter mate', and the bloke said 'no I'm not, I've just got a storage problem'.
So the psychiatrist got his coat and went. A fat lot of use that visit was.
The psychiatrist did say that he can't help anyone who won't admit it's a psychological problem.
I think it looked quite dangerous,i could only bear to watch about half an hour,i hope the house gets cleared somehow.
My brother and sister in law live in the village and have known Richard for years. They said on the phone that the house is gradually being cleared and that is ongoing with more rallying round to help.
My mother in law was a total hoarder and used to bring bags of stuff in from jumble sales, etc. Her larder was full of bags of flour and the freezer full of butter. Every room was full of bags of stuff. I am sure in her case it came from being a refugee and having nothing so she could not bear to see things thrown away as they might have a use one day. Mr LL has inherited it (to a much lesser extent and confined to one room in the house and the garage).

Unless the person is distressed by it themselves, then why should others worry. However, rubbish in gardens can cause environmental problems. This didn't happen in MinL's case, her garden was immaculate.
To missprim.... you have not upset me at all so don't worry about asking. I usually only post on here late at night and then not very often. So I will gladly explain further aout this unwanted and intrusive "disorder" (literally in this case!) Smile!
I have loads to do and am procrastinating at this very moment by going onto the Internet, which many people with this issue do all the time to avoid the problem and turn to something less stressful. Happy Christmas to everyone especially those finding it difficult...and I wept for that lovely man on the programme last night. Bless him. By the way on Sky Biography channel they are currently running a series of documentaries from America showing some of the more severe sufferers but I have never come across anything as bad as Richard's monumental problem. Maybe it was because he had no family member to chide him and nag him to curtain his collecting. Left alone, there was no incentive to reduce the clutter. XXXX
sorry, meant to type curtail!

To Stargazer thanks for getting back to this thread. I was worried that I may have spoken out of turn but I asked because I am genuinely interested in how our minds tick. I think I should have gone for a career in psychology.Although I dont have this particular problem I do do things that I consider not to be normal whatever normal is and I'm always intersted to hear what makes some people do certain things.
I found what you said very interesting and agree about finding a way to deal with problems.
I also have lots to do but have come on here as I find this relaxing 'most of the time' but today I must be firm with myself and get on with what I have to do. Will have a look in later tonight.
All best wishes for Christmas and the New Year xx
To Missprim and for anyone interested there is a programme on Sky Biography channel right now (5.00 pm to 6.00 pm)
