Soaps - aarrrgghh

Anyone else think that the main soaps have now reached such depravity that they should be on before 9pm. Certainly not suitable for childrem, I mean what depressing storylines. Who'd want to live in Albert Sq/Emmerdale/Weatherfield? I can only ever stand about 2 minutes at a time these days. It doesn't seem to matter when those 2 minutes are selected, there's always something nasty happenning. Who watches this S&*T?

I am not ashamed to say I watch Corrie, mainly for the consistent humour and good acting.  Also it attracts a lot of famous actors. ( Ian McKellan is appearing at the moment)

However, I would agree that there is a lot of content that is now not suitable for family viewing in all the soaps, although I would argue that Corrie is perhaps the least offensive, although there have been some pretty violent scenes.  So, yes, the soaps should be shown after the watershed.

I used to watch EastEnders and now occasionally watch Coronation Street, although often had to turn Corrie off, as I couldn't stand that stupid trembly thing that Katy Harris kept doing..Grrrrrr!! Lost interest in EastEnders a while ago, when it ran out of 'entertaining' story lines. Feels like I've wasted half an hour of my life, watching drivel!

they are a bit depressing aren't they?  Corrie used to be saved by the laugh factor, but these days the humour is all too often outweighed by tragedy, or tragically bad storylines, stretched to their limit.  I don't watch any soaps these days except (and this'll make the Scots ABers laugh) River City.  Just pure brilliant, as shellsuit Bob might say!

I agree with almost everything FP said about Corrie - yes it has a lot of serious stuff in there but it's always tempered by the humour.  I don't think it's too depressing and I don't think it's reached post-watershed level.  Eastenders is a different thing - I stopped watching it about 8 years ago and now whenever I catch any of it, it's so dark and gloomy I can't stand it.

The only soap I ever watch is Corra (as it's called round here) and I think it usually has the balance exactly right.  Good storylines mixed with humourous scenes, but I totally agree that the Ka-i crying/breakdown thing went on far too long.

The Bill has now turned into a soap, it's just a soap about police officers. I still watch it, but I have to say it was better when it was actually about crimes. It's gone downhill since the demise of Don Beech.

Oh, and I certainly wouldn't want to live in Sun Hill. You'd be at risk of being shot, kidnapped, raped, sold drugs, selling drugs, running drugs, having relationships with police officers after killing someone, being killed by a police office for doing something or other...dangerous place.

I stopped watching Eastenders about 8 years ago too,when I realised I felt depressed after each episode.I've now given up on Emmerdale also because every storyline appears to be fixated on either extra marital,underage or triangle relationships,or somebody is trying to hide something from the police! All get extremely boring after they've rolled the same basic storyline out time and time again!

  We love Corrie, we even had some friends tape all 5 weeks episodes when we went to New Zealand for 5 weeks.

I like Emmerdale, especially when i'm in it.

I left my television on after 'Lethal Weapon 3' while making a sandwich  and I came back into the living room to behold blatant hard pornography (on the t.v. I hasten to add) masquerading as 'a documentary exploring the diverse ways in which people enjoy their sexuality) on Channel 5. It had started at 11.15, a time when lots of youngsters, unfortunately, are not yet asleep in their beds. I consider myself, at my great age, to be unshockable but I find it pretty disgusting that programme makers are allowed to get away with this kind of trashy output that is invariably grossly demeaning to women when impressionable youngsters are likely to be watching.

I was never really into soaps except for Eastenders. But then it became more and more ridiculous. Now I watch "Bold and the Beautiful" reruns.
