Can someone please tell me how the UK get to go straight through to the finals of the contest but other countries have to 'qualify'. I have an inkling that it is to do with TV audience size - am I right or wrong?

Apparently we cough up enough cash to allow us to qualify.
Because the UK is one of the major financial backers of Eurovision.
Why oh why do we still enter this ridiculous travesty?

It's nearly as bent and incomprehensible as the EU - no, sorry, nothing's that bent.

The entire elected body had to resign twice for fraud, and the EU accounts have not been signed by its auditors for as long as I can remember.

GB is vastly unpopular in the EU, and we could have Madonna, Kathleen Jenkins and draft in Kylie Minogue, and we'd still come way down the list.

We don't even get Terry Wogan's comments any more, do we?

The BBC bankrolls the contest.
I hate the contest and never watch it - total waste of time and money.

But didnt we have to qualify a year or so back? I never watch it and agree it is a total waste of money. Johnny Foreigner don't like us plain and simple!
