I wish David Tennant would come back, I don't think Christopher Eccleston would come anywhere near it again which is a shame. DT seems to have all sorts of other stuff going on for him though.

I don't think it should be a woman, I think it's fine as it is, male Dr and female main sidekick.

That Idris Elba guy looks nice!

I think it should be someone who can look like they have history behind them (something I always felt Matt Smith lacked) so not sure about someone younger again.

Someone like Alan Rickman could be good with the brooding thing and great comic timing though he's better as a bit of a baddie though.

Maybe it will be John Hurt, as they showed him as a future Dr Who in the final episode of the last series?

Someone on R4 this morning made a comment that no one would bat an eyelid if the next Dr. Who was not white - and then made an off-cuff suggestion of Idris Elba.

I'd watch that! A gritty, violent, giant Dr. Who in the style of Luther? Yes please.

Would Elba do it now he's a 'Hollywood star'? More to the point would the BBC be willing to pay him what he now commands fee-wise?

Don't think it will ever be a female, as inherently the character is male. When River regenerated she stayed female. All conjecture of course.

How about Benedict Cummerbatch (probably spelled that wrong) just seen him in Into Darkness, kind of broody got that slightly crazed look in the eye. Would definitely take him home and back him a cake :-)

Of all the ones that are "speculated" about whenever this comes up, it's never them. So it won't be Cumberbatch or Elba. My fear is that they will go to the Sherlock cast, not for BC, but for Andrew Scott, who is a good actor but was a pretty ineffective Moriarty in that series. The BBC's own news page about this has a ridiculous list of possibles. It just takes someone to say "It might be Billie Piper" or "What about Helen Mirren" and it makes it onto their stupid list.

Last time I thought Richard Coyle would be a good choice but his moment has probably passed now. The speculation about bigger, more Hollywoody names is pointless. If they did a big feature film version then Depp might be pretty good, ditto Sam Rockwell. Equally silly is suggesting that a previous one would come back so forget about Tennant etc.

A while ago I'd have backed Damien Lewis but he's probably out of their league now with all his US success.

@matahari I think Hurt is portraying a much older version of the future Doctor for that story, I doubt he's the new replacement. Nah, as always it'll be someone none of us has thought of. @Eve While it wouldn't be Rickman I do think that darker "brooding" approach would be good for the next one, for a change.
