It was absolutely horrific and brought back the memories of last year when I lost my dear Dad. He had spent 10 miserable days in Hemel Hempstead General Hospital. The care was very similar to what you saw last night. Two years previously my mother-in-law spent 5 weeks in the QE2 in Welwyn. Again, the neglect and care was appalling. I was very angry and upset last night and I emailed the programme congratulating on them. Why should elderly people be treated like this in the last few days/weeks of their life. Why cannot they be treated with respect and the dignity they deserve so much. Who is to blame here? What can be done to stop this injustice. I knew the programme would upset me and I am on a mission and will campaign all the way.
I think there should be daily or at least weekly checks on these places. All those wicked people should be sacked and replaced by those who care. Let 'Help The Aged' oversee the running of these places. And let's have a live8 concert to pay for better care and bring it to the attention of those who do not know whats going on
I don't think it's entirely the fault of the nurses. From what I can remember there were 2 or 3 nurses for 11 patients? My friend who has been a nurse for 40 years said that when you have patients who need constant care (like the ones in the documentary) there should be 1 nurse to every 2/3 patients. She said it used to be like this and 2 or 3 nurses simply cannot give 11 patients the attention they need.
Whilst I was horrified by some of actions of the nurses in this I worry that the hospital will make a big show of sacking the nurses, but won't actually address the bigger issue.
yeah i agree that 2 nurses for 11 critical patients is very bad but i cant see this changing when it said the hospital was 100 million pounds in debt( along those lines) but some of those nurses were just taking liberties i thought because it was older people who were terminally ill. it just totally shocked me to see people treating other people this way it was absolutely disgusting.
