I found The Exorcist really frightening, but not the famous 'head turning s it was two other scenes -

One where Regan comes down from bed to the dinner party and says 'You're gonna die up there ...' and wets herself,

The other was when the demon spoke in the voice of the vagrant who asked Karras for money when he was travelling to the house - proof that the demon had to be real.

But for me, the scariest films I have ever seen are Roman Polanski's The Tenant - the definition of the word 'paranoia', and The Haunting - and not a drop of blood seen in either.

At the risk of sounding boring, they are works of fiction, they are not real and I don't think I've ever jumped at anything fictional in my life.
I am the opposite of Baldric and it doesn't take much to scare me. I saw the Exorcist when it was released and that put me off horror films for life. I messed up and watched Play Misty For Me not knowing it was going to be scary, but that frightened the life out of me.
All of them. It's the sound effects that gets me. I get nervous watching things like Silent Witness. I'm a wuss.
The bit in Carrie where the hand comes out the ground..... That did it for me
When I was little my uncle made us watch Chain Saw Massacre.

He said that we whinged and whined that he wouldn't let us watch horror movies with him so he gave in but then wouldn't let us leave the room when we got scared. My mother told him off.
And me, Sam.
I remember seeing this on TV as a kid, bloody terrified me.

American Werewolf in London - the 'comedy' aspect was lost on me, I found it scary!
Andy you've reminded me of another that disturbed me terribly and that was Roman Polanski's Repulsion with Catherine Deneuve. That was awful.
I did find Dog Soldiers to be effectively scary, but not terrifying, with a great denouement.

The scriptwriters were American, so they dropped the howler about driving from one point in Scotland to another point, and the journey taking four hours - not realising that it's not possible to drive from anywhere in Scotland for four hours and still be in Scotland!
Eraserhead. Now there's a wierd film.
Andy, did you really mean that you think that no car journey in Scotland is longer than 4 hours?
For anyone who wants to know what a bad LSD trip is like, without the trauma of experiencing it personally - watch Eraserhead..
I love horror films and cant honestly say that Ive ever been 'scared' but one film I watched did disturb me for a bit. Hostel3 (never seen the previous two) especially the bit where a guy is having his face flayed in front of an audience who had been betting on how he would be killed. Have seen it again since without been bothered.
for slow-building creepiness, Rosemary's Baby. And for a sudden shock the end of Deliverance, which Carrie stole.
