The female lead was Faye Dunaway and they didn’t put the fire out with the swimming pool water, they blew up the water tanks on the roof. Great film and I’ve seen it many times over the years.

Steve McQueen - swoon!!!!
Fire!
Sensurround
There was a party of some sort and the place went on fire, maybe I was too young, I didn't know the actors names
Nowt. Didn't see it.
I remember Victoria Principal; someone falling through a window on a very high floor; people using the elevators when they shouldn't and one of those people emerging ablaze; a pillar of some kind falling on someone when they release the water tanks and masses of blood coming from his mouth; someone opening an electrics cupboard and getting caught in an explosion...
Wasn't Robert Vaughn in it?

I remember the scenes with Fred Astaire and an elderly lady. He was trying to help her as much as possible, having been a bit of a gigolo at the start.
Someone cut corners during the building of it which caused the problem.
Someone who had escaped went back in to help rescue others. Ridiculous.
Upon production of their i.d. card, members of the UK Fire Service were allowed free entry to cinemas to watch the film.
Try the film critic website Rotten Tomatoes.
only that Fred Astaire i think was in it, it was quite a good film at the time, scary to think that it has happened in real life,
I remember seeing it at the cinema and I remember thinking it was the best action film I'd ever seen. I loved it.
zero, I never saw it, never wanted to.
These films must be hilarious for fire service personnel to watch. In real fires visibility is usually zero in poisonous smoke. These 'hero' characters who rescue others would in reality be dead in no time.

When they explode the water tanks at the top of the tower to extinguish the flames

I remember watching it on telly when I was young. Can't remember much about it except obviously a huge fire. I think I remember people being stuck in a lift too, but that might be something else.
Party on top floor

Shoddy building work

Fire exit door blocked by cement (linked to shoddy building work)

Deaf woman in one of the rooms - obviously couldn't hear the alarms - think there was also a cat. and a child

Think there was something else - what could it be???

Oh yes - Fire Fire Fire!!!!!! :P
Went to see this in the days when they showed two films plus the Pathe news. Loved Towering Inferno, but the "B" film that was on with it called "Doberman Patrol" was one of the scariest films I have ever seen.
Just about everything.
One of my favourite films of all time, and I watch it maybe every 18 months-ish.
Victoria Principal wasn’t in it, NoMercy. Are you thinking of Earthquake?
