I know it's literally only a game, but how can anyone in conscience take the lower offer from the Chaser, and then share if the rest of the team wins, usually having taken higher offers, at risk to themselves, and won through, taking the lower offer taker through with them.

Conscious has little to do with it as it is a team game.
However much is in the pot, the team only wins it if they beat the chaser in the final round. One has no chance against the Chaser if there is only one left, a better chance with two left and even better if there is three or four.

Sqad - I understand that - but if I had taken the lower offer, I would only be happy to take my share of the final prize, if I answered more questions than the rest of the team put together.
