Was watching a program last night called "Eat, Shop, Save".

Family on there needed £800 for a special chair for their disabled daughter so called in the TV people to give them advice on how to achieve this.

Fair enough, but within minutes of presenter talking to them it transpires they get takeaways at least 4 times a week!

Apart from the obvious unhealthy aspects , does it really take a TV team to convince them that just cutting back on this would save them a shed load of money, in just a few weeks they could easily save enough even if they didn't do anything else.

Are these people just thick? Just want to be on TV? They astound me sometimes.

Every secondary school i have been in has food technology at key stage 3- ie the first 3 years, and then there's the option to do something at key stage 4. Every school i've been in has covered the topic of healthy eating- the eat-well plate always comes up (and it comes up in Science and in PHSE) But because it's difficult to make anything substantial in a one hour lesson the meals tend to be quick and not so healthy- sauasage rolls, garlic bread, chocolate brownies,
etc
Would they cook even if they were taught? Instant food is the easy option - and it's readily available.
And some adults go to work to pay for the takeaways that are needed because they do not have time or energy to cook due to work etc.

I'm not necessarily pin pointing their cooking skills, as Baza says some families are to busy, tired to do certain things, cooking, cleaning ect and if you can afford not to do it that's fine.

But if you want to cut back is it really too hard to sit down and work out where the money is going?

Without even thinking too much about it, if I wanted to save money, my cleaner would let go.

It's not hard.
IMO it's not how busy they are, there should always be priorities and family needs should come first. It's true what Naomi said, a lot of people nowadays want everything, they don't want to give up their 'pleasures' whatever they may be, to save for important things.

Too much credit a available where they can't afford to pay back...that's a lot of the problem. If they did have it so readily like we didn't years ago, they might get the gist of the real world.
How much were they paid to appear on this show? Perhaps they wouldn't have to change their habits if the TV company paid them enough to buy the special chair.

It's funny you should say that Maggie, the TV people did give them the chair at the end.

But my point is did they really need to be told what they needed to do?
