Why on earth do the news programmes insist on broadcasting live from their encampments outside the Houses of Parliament, when we can't hear what is being said because it's drowned out by the shouting and bell-ringing of the flag-wearing morons? I just turn it off - I can't be the only one.

IMO, most of the outside news broadcasting/reporting is pointless....could just as well be from inside.
visual variation. If everyone reports from the same studio it gets boring. I don't think they can generally broadcast from within parliament itself so over the road is the best they can do.

Couldn't agree more, well said. Why on earth do we need someone outside 10 Downing Street at 10 o;clock at night ?? Madness.

"gets boring"....so how does radio news reporting fit into that argument?

I realise that's the theory, jno, but it just doesn't work - even shouted swearing heard during Channel 4 News last night.

Yes, fbg. Private Eye used to have a column called (I think) Going Live, which instanced reporters reporting live from somewhere absolutely nothing was happening
even radio reporters have to get out of the house and interview people sometimes - the interview itself may not be broadcast, but the reporter will generally have to file a report asap, and equipment these days is good enough to do it as an outside broadcast.

Swearing adds local colour, though radio people do try to minimise noises off.
It’s a handy place to interview people from
Because that is where our parliament is and the people of both sides of the debate are having their say .None of this is pretty so at least it’s giving an idea of the real problem we as a country are facing .When the taxi drivers start arriving listen for the cheers of delight .
Don't worry - any day now they'll have some poor sap standing outside in the snow telling you it's snowing, now that is something to really shout at your telly about!!!

Who will film it then? May as well send a reporter a long with the cameras!! Otherwise how boring would that be?
Exactly.
Each to their own but I find this an extraordinary sort of thing to get worked up about.
Just daft as a reporter standing outside some car dealership at night to tell us about financial problems in the motor industry.
Or reporting from outside the gates of Wimbledon (when it's not even on) about a tennis player who's tested positive for drugs.
there are (approximately) 2000 TV channels in Britain, so outside reporters aren't really monopolising the medium.
What sort of person gets cross because there’s a reporter standing out in the snow?
Surely it’s the poor old reporter who has a right to be miffed lol
ich - // What sort of person gets cross because there’s a reporter standing out in the snow? //

This sort!

I object to having my intelligence patronised.

I am sixty-four, so I was around in 1963 - I know what snow looks like!!!

Just tell me it's snowing, I'll understand, I don't need live images of someone standing in the snow to get the message across.

As to the reporter - if I was getting what they get for doing it, I'd stand outside all day!!!
Better now?
Yes thank you xx
Just because you don’t like it have you considered the housebound old person who loves watching the outside broadcasts because it makes them happy
