After reading Sparkly's rant i thought i woukd tell you i got told off in Sainsburys today!

I was so upset as i always try to adhere to all the guidelines. I was wearing my mask and the cashier was behind a glass/perspex sceen. I packed and payed as usual but as she gave me my change and i thanked her as usual, she said "in future can you stand back from the screen".

I was so surprised as i didn't realise i had got it wrong, that i said "oh im so sorry" and scuttled off embarrassed.

I was still thinking about it when i got home and told MrK, he said i should of asked her how far i shoukd stand back, any further back and i dont think i would have been able to reach.

How did she expect you to collect your purchases and pay for them?
Definitely OTT.
That was way over the top in my opinion, as she was behind a screen. Maybe she was having a bad day! I would have said something unless I was taken completely by surprise like you, but I would have got my equilibrium back as I walked away!
Jobsworth. Perhaps the screen gives her an air of authority. The trouble is I can always think of things to say when I get spoken to like this, but only when I get home!
Perhaps like a lot of people, she is confused with the rules. I would have gone to customer services and asked them how far are you supposed to stand back from the screen.

Don't let this bug you, forget about it. She was having a bad day.
is there a mark on the floor to distance you from cashier if not i would have said
The point of the screen surely is to enable you to stand a bit closer, as you have to.
In our local shop, the chap who served in the morning (before the Time of the Face Coverings) used to ask people to stand well away from the counter. But then of course you had to approach to pay :-)
The screen facing the cashier no distancing needed.
The screen at the end where you collect your groceries and pay, you should keep your face away. There is a tendency (I do it) to bend down and lean in, which obviously negates having the screen in the first place.
Things like that can sting when you're trying your best, they should put a sticker on the screen - their fault not yours.
My favourite was the lady in Tesco who once tried to make us retrace our steps all the way back round their "one-way system" rather than risk a head-on collision in an empty aisle to pop back for the cheese ...
Shop elsewhere -and make sure Sainsbury's know why, by posting on their FB page. I did that when I literally got shouted at by a c+wb+g checkout person in Aldi .
I don't think it would be fair to drop a member of staff in it for something like that, or indeed to "blacken (ha ha ha)" the name of one supermarket on the strength of it.
I did very nearly write a letter of complaint to Tesco about their draconian marshalling system (since abandoned thankfully).
Then thought better of it.
// I don't think it would be fair to drop a member of staff in it for something like that, //

I disagree, its lack of training and needs to be addressed. This checkout person could be dealing with people who would find her attitude more than just embarrassing and could cause an anxiety attack for instance. Although she was pointing out their policy she should have been more pleasant in her approach.

Thanks for making me feel better, i was just taken by surprise that, of course, as always i didnt say anything and thought of loads of things i should have said once i was back home.

It just got me that there are so many people not even trying as sparkly said and i get the brunt of her mood when i thought i was trying.

Really made me think now, if i see her again i think i will go to another till or better still go to hers and ask her for guidance as to where i should stand.
APC // Although she was pointing out their policy //
But was it their policy? If so there should have been a notice stating that policy.
//The screen at the end where you collect your groceries and pay, you should keep your face away.//

And so be unable to see what you are doing?

AuntPolly, i never go in Aldi since i got shouted at my one of their staff for not being quick enough.
Darcey//ask her for guidance as to where i should stand.//
Yes, and in a loud voice.
You must live near me. I got moaned at in Sainsbury’s at the till. Compared to Morrison’s,their screens are pathetic but, even so, I felt it was unnecessary. Like you I am always careful.
