anyone see this last night? OK here's an idea. The councils were complaining about the costs of cleaning up etc but they charge all but private households to legally drop waste at tips etc. So surely one thing that would help is if it didn't cost a fortune to dump waste legally. Surely any money they take from legit waste clearers is more than offset by having to clean up after the fly tippers.

Our council charges £75 to collect up to 3 large items. Their tips now charge for most DIY materials e.g. chipboard, plasterboard, kitchen units etc etc and then they wonder why fly-tipping has increased.

yup.
You'd think so.

When we have a clear out we use the van to go to the tip and we're always questioned.

I see people posting pictures of fly tipping in the streets. Awful

I would never hire a 'Man with a Van'

Surely the Local authorities can see the economic sense. Just let small waste clearers dump their waste at the tip and then most of them wont fly tip.

woofy, getting a license is very easy and, as the program highlighted many of them are the ones doing the fly tipping. They basically charge less and fly tip it keeping all the cash. For example, they hired a licenced clearer to clear out a garage. They reckon it should cost £200 but the guy charged £120 and then fly tipped it.
I wonder how they manage this in other (similar) countries? I have seen fly-tipping in Spain but what about e.g. Japan and our friends in the EU.
Woof - I don't need to. Both my OH and son have work vans, but one time I did phone 'a man with a van' and I knew him. I knew it would have been fly tipped.

I hate litter of any type. It's from when I went to Germany. The streets were so clean.
ummmm
the streets are clean in England generally its the beautiful country lanes that are blighted mainly
Our tip even charges for private households to drop off many items.
Can't you call the council to collect large items in the UK ? Here it is so easy, just make a phone call, tell them where you will leave it and they will tell you between what hours and bingo, next morning it's gone.
@davebro. They do the same in Japan, call the council and they will collect it, free. Japanese would never flytip, and there is not a lot in Spain, what there is is probably from the Brits.
Samuraisan, my council is choosy what it will take and charges more than the local licenced businesses do.... I was refused collection of a dog car cage as it wasn't "a household item" and had to more or less swear on bended knee (over the phone!) that a filing cabinet had only ever been used for domestic paperwork. Both metal, both scrappable.

How much is spent on clearing up fly tipping compared to the money from legal waste companies?

yes bang on diddly, madness
Dudley Council is as clear as mud about its charges. I challenge any of you to tell me how much they would charge to collect one large sofa and two armchairs.

Correct, TTT. Now click the 'Classification of One Item' box

I see, yes that does seem contradictory. The rules were probably devised by a contrarian.
