Just binge-watched all 6 episodes of series 3 of After Life. After the first 3 episodes, i began to think it wasn't as good as the first two series. However, those last 3 episodes dragged it right back into line with both series 1 and 2. Brilliant - if ever so poignant - watch.
Haven't seen the last series yet, just rewatching the first two. Derek was even better, imv, and I had avoided watching that for a long time.
All his acting parts are very different, but he manages a good mix of humour and sadness with his writing.
I've never watched Afterlife but keep meaning to. If ever I get the time I will sit down and watch it. I'm neither here nor there about Ricky Gervais, I can take him or leave him.
One series my husband and I both loved was Come Fly With Me (Matt Lucas and David Walliams). I wish they'd make a second series. Absolutely hilarious!
It also depends on your experience I think. I for example could/would not ever watch a program about stillbirth no matter what the context or how excellently it was reviewed, and that's 12 years later. The mai premise in afterlife us about a man who's lost his long term partner to cancer and how it's affecting him. If I had had that experience I probably wouldn't watch it
Have watched the first few episodes of Series 3 and am very disappointed. Not so much pathos and humour and far more smutty. I'm not prudish, but there is smutty overload. OH feels the same. But will watch the next episodes as and when. No binge watching though as for the first two series.
The last episode was wonderful, after I had said this series wasn't as good as the others. I'm not a cryer but did cry last night at that last episode and feel just like Naomi. Acted brilliantly by Ricky, and only a man with good heart could have written that. Install watch that episode all over again very soon.
Totally agree with you, Pat. The first 3 episodes seemed a little misplaced, but got better and better... did cry at the end.
But, I will watch it again some time, as there are quite a few distractions here, which don't always help...
I wish I had Netflix, I would definitely watch this after all the rave reviews on here, but then again I am a fan of RG. I LOVED Derek and cried buckets at the one where his Dad came looking for him and at first Derek wasn't interested, but the ending, Oh My, filling up again just thinking about it. I'd love it to be repeated.
It really does, Ken. I think I posted elsewhere... that so many people were concerned if anything might happen to the dog, that he actually publicised some reassurance. That would have been a step too far...
Also, he had said he gave a brief tribute to key workers, which was deliberate.
I thought the last 3 episodes of S3 were terrific, better than the 1st three. But then Mr Gervaise is terrific, his worst is better than most people's best;-))
Very few can pull at your guts and heartstrings like he can.
