Richard Stilgoe used to be the person who compiled the conundrum. He did that for may years. He might still be doing it. Not sure.

That surprises me, Bamber. I just assumed that they used computer generated conundrums.
Richard Osman
I spoke with Richard Stilgoe many years ago at the Royal Albert Hall. That was one thing he told me. Such a genuine and fantastic person too. I think he's been a guest on Countdown a number of times.
a computer simulated Richard Whiteley?
Let's hope she's planning to spend more time with her dentist
barry - // Shame on you, Andy. It is cruel, spiteful personal comments like yours that cause people to be so insecure and unhappy that they resort to plastic surgery. //

No, it's not.

People who have plastic surgery do so because they are unhappy with an aspect, or aspects of themselves that they want altered.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with what other people think - plenty of people who are insecure about their appearance can seek, and receive, honest views from people they trust that there is nothing that needs 'modification'.

That will make absolutely no difference to the individual who remains insecure and wants changes made, they will have them anyway.

Take Katie Price as a prime example.

Poll one hundred people and ask them if Katie Price before surgery needed anything changing about her, and the majority would say she was a perfectly normal pretty young woman.

Ms Price clearly thinks otherwise and has embarked on a series of altering procedures leaving her virtually unrecognisable from her first days as a model.

The media is littered with endless examples of people who have gone to extreme lengths to adjust their appearance, and it's almost entirely down to self-image and comfort, and virtually nothing to do with what other people think or say.

Ms Robinson puts herself in the media and has built an entire career out of being a 'nasty' person - I seriously doubt she is remotely bothered by the opinions of any strangers, which is why I am perfectly happy to express mine on here.

/ I thought you were better than that //

Clearly I am, I am aware of Ms Robinson's persona, and her willingness to place herself in the firing line for the views of the public, it goes with being a 'media personality' - I know, it's something I make a living exploring.

I think Helen Fospero, who's been a guest and comes across well, would be an excellent host.

Philip Schofield
I'll get my coat.
Another cheer for the departure of Ms Robinson - her 'interactions' with the contestants and guests have all the spontaneity and wit of an oak wardrobe - thank goodness for the fast-forward button.

One of the key elements of the main host's job is to know when to shut up and keep the programme moving - something that AR was so poor at. It's not a job for a self-promoting show-off, like Brandreth or Giedroyc - they may be ideal for other shows (or even as guests on Countdown), but the main host needs to be rather more self-effacing.

I'd vote for Colin Murray - I'd not come across him before his stints as guest and presenter of Countdown, but was mightily impressed with his gentle humour and his obvious love of the game.
Stephen Fry.
The Blessed Saint Stephen is an interesting idea - he loves words in general and Countdown in particular - but could he resist the urge to get involved all the time, rather than being the manager of the game?

Not sure ...
You had to get the word Blessed in there didn't you, Dave!
You know I'm still not speaking to you since, last night, you suggested Brian Blessed!

Patsy has good taste... :-)
I really can't watch Countdown with Anne Robinson. Just can't stand her personality. I would go with someone younger and newer to presenting. Give a newcomer a chance. Can't think who though!

I thought Nick Hewer was a good host, putting the contestants at ease, allowing the guest to do their "thing", and chipping in with the odd anecdote or comment. Just a bit "grey".
I agree about Nick Hewer - the game 'just worked' with him in the chair.
Question Author
Stephen Fry was fantastic on QI but he was working with professionals, is he any good with the general public?
The twitterati have just suggested that the new presenter needs more empathy with the contestants/performers than AR and a less strident tone - not difficult unless they employ Darth Vader ...
Sue Perkins would be my choice from those already mentioned. Articulate and intelligent and serious , but with a great sense of humour and empathy. But quite honestly I hardly ever watched Countdown.
Some younger, fresh blood.

Bobby Seagull would be my choice.
