has to be the exorcist had to sleep with the light on for weeks!
the chucky films were quite gorey but did'nt give me nightmares cos i watched them with my husband, i would'nt dare to watch them on my own.
Nightmare on Elm Street- the 1st two. I think it's because I could totally believe that someone could 'get you' in your sleep- scared the bejesus outta me they did!
Years ago (1980 to be precise), we had to stay at a hotel in Luton, prior to catching a flight the following morning. Wife (of less than 24 hours) went to the cinema prior to going for a meal. Went to see Friday the 13th (part 1) and were both convinced that they had actually killed people to make the film!! Must admit we are more cynical now - but wife still doesn't like the film to be even mentioned !!!
the grudge upset me, and blair witch, i still see that guy standing in the corner at the end of the film....i have to say i am a big wuss when it comes to scarey films(as you can probably tell!!)
the new texas chain saw massacre. Flipping terrified me.
Exorcist......i found it hard even watching the "making of" programme!!
has to be the grudge. the ring the evil dead.

the burning from the 80 s

Years ago I saw a movie about a young woman who had multiple personalities, I think it starred Sally Field. Not a horror film exactly but it certainly freaked me out. Does anyone know what it was called?

Dead Of Night - a British film made in b & w, about 1947.

I saw it when I was about nine, and it gave me a fear and loathing of puppets in general, and ventrilaquists' dummies in particular, which I have to this day.

Without a doubt, The Exorcist.
It has to be The people under the stairs - my friedns older sister and husband took us to see it - when we were about 16 - we shoudln't have got in really but O my God - it freaked us out - there were kids kept inside the walls of this house and this loonie guy kept shooting at the walls to kill them. His wife was a nut too. Most scary films make me laugh if it's gory otr whatever - it's the psychological ones that I find worst and although it's not a horror I hated Pacific Heights - it was the thought of someone being able to take over and stay in your house that freaked me out. I loved the Omen - I saw it when it first came out when I was about 8 and my favourite bit was when the sheet of glass severs the guys head - gory kid and Jaws when the boys leg gets eaten off - my mum couldn't believe it I was laughing hysterically shouting it's still wearing the trainer - so I'm no woos
Andy, Dead of Night creeped me out, too. In my younger days (early '70s), two movies that gave me nightmares were Carnival of Souls and Horror Hotel. I would probably laugh if I saw them for the first time today, but the times were so much simpler then . . . and I was so sheltered . . .

Also, Dario Argento's Suspiria had a number of frightening images.
Andy, I'm with you. Dead of Night does it for me every time.

I also found The Wicker Man to be ultra creepy.

Recently, The Grudge, made me jump when Sarah Michelle Gellar is looking out of the bus window, and the demon is looking in from the outside.

Also, The Shining with Jack Nicholson.

Yes, Dead of Night I'll go with - especially the episode with the haunted mirror. George Romero's original Night of the living dead is the scariest zombie movie (what makes it creepy is that it's shot like an amateur movie, but for some reason I didn't find Blair Witch nearly so spooky).

Of more modern films the ultimate chiller must be the original version of The Vanishing (not the Hollywood remake).

For me it was Evil Dead - It was the horrible sounds in that film that really freaked me out and i wouldnt watch it again even now! The other thing that really scared me and gave me nightmares for ages was Buck Rogers and the Space Vampire! It really scared me silly , i was only young but again i couldnt watch it now!
