The mock-surprise expression at someone's statement, the fake laugh, the staring at someone when they don't know it and it all makes a nice little psychology human-behaviour project.
In the course of our voyerism, we learn a lot about ourselves, along the lines of: "I thought I was the only person in the world who did that!" or "I should try that technique of looking when I'm feigning interest". It might be difficult for us to accept that we act for the image we have on other people, but we are social animals and so, we do!
